WuWu Firewall / NAT How-To

WuWu is designed to be completely operational from behind a firewall / NAT. If you and another person are both behind a firewall / NAT, you may not be able to connect to one another. By modifying the way the firewall / NAT controls incoming connections you can guarantee that a link will be established. Unfortunately there are so many different kinds of firewall / NAT products on the market today, it would be impossible to tell you exactly how to configure each one. You will need to refer to the documentation for your firewall / NAT system to determine exact method to configure your individual product. The information contained below is merely a guide help you configure your product properly. Interface Dynamics highly recommends you consult your system administrator or networking professional before changing your firewall or NAT settings.

Example: A generic hardware firewall (router/NAT)

1. Configure your router/NAT for port forwarding to the machine that will be running WuWu to a specific TCP port (consult your network administrator or product documentation for this procedure). It can be any valid TCP port number that is not in use on the local machine. (e.g. 5893)
2. To configure WuWu to communicate over an assigned port you will need to perform the following operations. Right click the WuWu icon in the notification area, Choose properties. Click the connection tab. You will see two port range settings, lowest port and highest port. Change the setting in both boxes to the port number you assigned in the Firewall setup.(e.g. 5893) Click “Apply” Then “OK” to continue.

Note: It is possible to forward more than 1 port to the machine running WuWu. However, there is no actual advantage to doing this and the multiple ports forwarded MUST be contiguous.

Example: Microsoft Windows XP

Microsoft’s new version of Windows (XP) has a built in Firewall. You will need to have your machine’s IP address on the network to configure the Firewall properly. This system may be configured as follows:

1. From the Start Button choose the “Settings” Menu. Choose “Control Panel” then choose “Network Connections”. Choose your network connection from the list by left clicking it once and then choose “Change the Settings of this Connection” from the list on the left. From the “Local Area Connections” Properties box choose the “Advanced” tab. If the “Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet” check box is not selected then the built in Firewall in Windows XP is not enabled. No further action is needed for Firewall setup. Please continue with step 3. If this box is checked then you will need to configure the Firewall to operate with WuWu. Please proceed with step 2.

2. To configure the Built in Firewall in Windows XP you will need to check the “Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet” box and proceed in this manner. Once you have checked the box above you will be able to choose the settings button on the bottom right of the “Local Area Connections” window. Upon doing this you will see the “Advanced Settings” window. From this window choose “Add” You will need to type in the name of the service you are configuring, (In this case it is WuWu) the IP address of the machine that is running (Hosting) WuWu. (This will be your machine’s IP address on the network) Then enter the port number you wish to assign for WuWu to communicate on. (e.g. 5893) in both the “External” and “Internal” port numbers. You may choose any available and valid port number for this setting. These port numbers MUST be the same and the “TCP” option on the “External” port number must be selected. Then choose “OK” to proceed with closing all of the dialog boxes. You then need to configure WuWu to operate on the assigned port number. Please proceed to step 3.

Example: SohoWare BroadGuard NBG800 Secure Cable/DSL Router

1. Open the SohoWare BroadGuard NBG800 Setup menu. Choose Port forwarding from the menu on the left. Choose the Protocol (TCP in this case) and the port to be forwarded (e.g. 5893). Select the IP address of the machine it is to be forwarded to on the private network. Select save and select restart. The NBG800 will restart itself.

Example: ZoneLabs ZoneAlarm ZoneLabs
ZoneAlarm is a type of software firewall that attempts to make automatic configurations of firewall security.

1. When WuWu is run for the first time on a system with ZoneAlarm installed, ZoneAlarm will prompt the user with a ZoneAlarm Program Alert. This will ask if the user wants to allow WuWu to access the Internet. Click the check box next to “Remember this answer next time I use this program” and answer yes. ZoneAlarm will then display another ZoneAlarm Program Alert where WuWu is asking for server rights, again click the check box next to “Remember this answer next time I use this program” and answer yes. Click the Security button on the ZoneAlarm Control Center and choose advanced. In the advanced area you will see your ethernet adapter listed, check the box next to it, click apply and OK. ZoneAlarm will then recognize the connection within 60 seconds. If the connection is not recognized then your computer will need to be restarted. Interface Dynamics Inc. strongly recommends you consult your system administrator or networking professional before changing your firewall or proxy settings.
